sense and sensibility

I've just returned home from watching the new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, and I knew I would enjoy it being a Jane Austen lover and hopeless romantic. The Guardian newspaper rated this movie three stars, and upon seeing this review, I suddenly questioned going. I love the original adaptation of this novel, mostly because it depicts sisterhood, girlhood and romance in a jolly, light-hearted way.

Now that I've seen the movie, I would say that the director, Georgia Oakley, watched the 90s adaptation and decided to do the complete opposite - and I don't mean this as an insult. The movie itself was a lot more dark and gloomy. The hues of the screen tended to be blue and grey. The bad weather reflected the down-hearted moods of the sisters after leaving Norwood and residing in a small, coastal cottage.

The Guardian claimed that the casting was the main issue, but I actually think that the casting was what made this new movie so perfect. Daisy Edgar Jones as Eleanor was almost a match in heaven - she portrayed Eleanor perfectly, and even before watching the film I knew she would be good. Esme Creed Miles, who I had not heard of before this film, played Marianne very well too.

The Guardian mostly criticised the looks of Edward Ferrars and Willoughby, and I can sort of understand their point. It is quite a high standard already set with Hugh Grant and Greg Wise playing those two gentleman in the world-known adaptation years before. Frank Dillane played Willoughby fine in this movie. It wasn't anything too special, but it wasn't bad either. George McKay as Edward wasn't problematic for me, either.

In conclusion, it was a super good movie, and I would recommend seeing it - although I think the 1995 adaptation will always be my favourite !
